Installing a sensor network near a patient or person with disabilities, can help with constant care and control. Diseases are not exact sciences and unexpected situations can arise that could be avoided with closer control of the patient. Waspmote can include sensors for measuring biometric parameters, capable of detecting heartbeats, breathing rates, movements, etc. and also environmental sensors to control the patient’s surroundings (e.g. to ensure a room has the correct oxygen level (O2)). If an abnormal value is detected, the incident can be recorded on the internal network and/or an SMS can be sent to the doctor’s PDA, reducing warning and therefore action times. This helps to monitor patients in a hospital or clinic as well as in their own homes while sleeping.

Given its small size, wireless connection (ZigBee) and long battery life, Waspmote is an ideal candidate for monitoring sportsmen on the playing field and sending their vital signs to the medical control point in real time. This can help coaches and doctors evaluate sportsmen’s performances better.
