lifetime of Waspmote Plug&Sense

Post by swe » Wed Jun 26, 2019 11:39 am

Hi,

What's the designed lifetime of Waspmote Plug&Sense Smart Water (with Solar Panel connected)? 3 years? 5 years?

If you say it depends on how many sensors, the interval of monitoring/sending data, etc., could you please give several typical examples.

I found an article as below stating that the lifetime could be extended indefinitely connecting a solar panel. But the rechargeable battery should have a limit of rechargeable times and thus the lifetime. Please clarify.

https://www.cooking-hacks.com/documenta ... s/waspmote

"Using this mode, lifetime of each node may vary from 1 to 5 years depending on the duty cycle and the battery capacity. Although the lifetime can be extended indefinitely connecting a solar panel in the dedicated socket on the board."

Thanks.

Hi,

We can't provide a lifetime of the battery since as you said, it depends on the applications. Customers need to perform field tests to know the current consumption of their applications. In addition, you can find the current consumption of each sensor and radio modules in the technical guides. Customers can estimate the current consumption with that information.

The maximum charging current through the panel solar is 300mA but it will depend on the intensity of the sun to the solar panel.

According to the datasheet o the battery, the cycle life is 300 times.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. However, could you please advise how we could perform the field test, in particular, what data to be captured in order to calculate the lifetime? and how to calculate with all the data together with 300mA panel solar and 300 times life cycles of battery? Could you please give some typical examples?

From what we observed for the current field test, the battery always keeps charging to the full percentage (100%) with the solar panel. The interim battery percentages are from 95% to 99%.

Thanks.

Hi,

You can check the charging current through the solar panel using the function PWR.getBatteryCurrent(). Knowing the current consumption of the sensors and radio modules and the charging current you could try to estimate under what circumstances the battery will be fully discharged. But we think that it isn't possible to know the lifetime expected for the battery.

Is it possible to replace the battery of Plug&Sense and how? For example, after few years, the battery will become worn-out and need replacement.

Hi,

Yes, it is possible to replace the battery. In that case, you can send the device to put facilities to do that or we will send you instructions to do it for yourself.
