The sensor devices

The sensors measure fill levels in bins via ultrasonic beams. They can monitor any type of waste (mixed waste, paper, plastics, glass, clothing,bio-waste, liquids, electronics, metal….) in bins and containers of various types and sizes.

Libelium’s engineering team offers a tailor-made configuration service for the smart waste management system:

You need to know what type of container you want to measure and select the sensors accordingly.

You need to connect the sensor to some network to send the data to the cloud. Therefore, you have to take into account all the networks available on site.

The sensors need to be configured using Bluetooth technology via a configurator app.

Libelium guides you through the process to adjust the configuration (measurement times, network, recognition of pickup), check the network connection, check the battery status and much more.

Detailed bin inventory

All monitored bins and stands can be seen on the map to be visited at any time via the Street View feature from Google. Bins or stands are visible on the map as green, orange or red circles. The number in the circle represents the last measurement (%).

See bin details in the Dashboard – capacity, waste type, last measurement, GPS location and collection schedule or pick recognition.

Real-time bin monitoring

The Dashboard displays real-time data on fill levels of bins monitored by smart sensors.

In addition to the % of fill-level, based on the historical data, the tool predicts when the bin will become full. Sensors recognize picks as well to check when the bin was last collected.

Real-time data and predictions allows the user to eliminate the overflowing bins and stop collecting half-empty ones.

Expensive bins

Identify bins that drive up collection costs. The tool calculates a rating for each bin in terms of collection costs. The tool considers the average distance depo-bin-discharge in the area.

The tool assigns bin a rating (1-10) and calculates the distance from depo-bin discharge.
Users can relocate depo or discharge and adjust pricing based on the rating.

Understand filling cycles
What is the filling cycle for the bin? Find a bin on the map or in the dashboard, and access a filling graph to see its filling cycles and picks over the last few weeks.

If it gets full very fast, users might consider increasing capacity to save collection costs.

Do not miss a pick
How many bins did you miss last week? For periodically picked bins, the tool provides “pick evaluation” recording picks (sensor) and comparing them to the schedule. Identify in real-time any missed, or off-schedule picks.

Adjust bin distribution
Ensure the most optimal distribution of bins. Identify areas with either dense or sparse bin distribution. Make sure all trash types are represented within a stand. Based on the historical data, user can adjust bin capacity or location where necessary.

Eliminate unefficient picks
Eliminate the collection of half-empty bins. The sensors recognize picks. By using real-time data on fill levels and pick recognition, we can show you how full the bins you collect are.
The report shows how full the bin was when picked. You immediately see any inefficient picks below 80% full.

Plan waste collection routes
The tool semi-automates waste collection route planning. Based on current bin fill levels and predictions of reaching full capacity, user is ready to respond and schedule waste collection.

Calculate costs (optional tool)
The tool uses several variables to calculate waste collection costs, and helps to reduce them. Bellow the map, you can see Costs, Costs/m3, Cost/kg, Duration, Length km, Volume m3 and Weight kg for each route. In addition to the bins, other settings can be applied such as collection vehicles, depots, discharges, to calculate their related costs.

Solve reports (optional tool)
Introduce Citizen app to citizens. It allows them to report any issues with bins via a mobile app. You can resolve these issues in the Dashboard. The reports include bin identification, GPS location and citizens can even attach photos. Using the app is faster and easier than reporting via email or social media.
