10 Years of mote evolution: from WeC to Waspmote

It has been more than 10 years since the first mote (WeC) was released by the Berkeley University. Since then multiple platforms have been developed by research centers, universities and companies.

The Sensors & Instrumentation Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) based in London, UK, talks inside the study titled “Power Management Technologies to Enable Remote and Wireless Sensing” (pdf here) about the different mote families and its evolution during the last 10 years.

It is a big pleasure for Libelium to see how Waspmote is said as the natural evolution of the mote platforms as it counts not only with a bunch of different modules (ZigBee, Bluetooth, GPRS, GPS) but also with an open source compilation environment and programming libraries and multiple sensor boards what makes it really easy for developers and researchers to start creating wireless sensor networks from the first day.

Explore what Libelium has become

Today, we carry that same spirit forward—towards something even greater.

We’ve evolved into a company delivering end-to-end solutions, built for the real world—not just for labs. We now design and deploy environmental digital twins, powered by hyperlocal, reliable data captured by our own devices and processed on platforms engineered for real-time insights and decision-making.

Waspmote was our first step. At present, we walk further—with the same belief: that technology is a powerful tool to make the world a better place.

While Waspmote was ideal for prototyping and research environments, Libelium now offers integrated, production-ready IoT solutions for real-world challenges.
